Using mindfulness to observe objects around us:
Every single day we look at things around us.
We look at people, at images, at faces, objects, screens. Specially screens, all day long. We are exposed to innumerable images, forms, shapes and pictures, but it´s very uncommon for us to be able to observe. Just for the sake of seeing, in order to ground ourselves and come back to the present moment.
Therefore, I want to invite you to practice mindfulness with one of our senses: the sight.
For this purpose, I’d like you to choose a particular object as the focus of your attention.
It could something as simple as a flower or a plant. There comes benefit from choosing an object in nature and colors that could be calming, such as dark blue. You could also choose an object that’s not static, but in which you can appreciate the movement and flow, such as a candle or water font, or stream.
Once you’ve chosen your object, I invite you to find a comfortable position. You can sit with the sole of your feet in contact with the floor and let´s start.
First, take some deep breaths in order to release any tension, any mental images and memories from the day and to devote this time for our practice.
Then, let´s start observing with openness, kindness and non judgement, with curiosity and a beginner’s mind. Like if it was the first time you´re looking at this particular object: observing the colors and their nuances, the light and shadow, the textures and patterns. Without rushing, or categorizing. Just observing with curiosity and openness.
If your mind wanders, that’s perfectly normal. Just go back gently to your own breath and then, return to the focus of the practice: the object you’re observing with full awareness.
Let me know how it goes for you. I hope you find it benefitial.
Sending you my best wishes and love.
