What is mindfulness? Haven’t you asked yourself this question or has anyone asked you?
We need to understand what mindfulness is, in order to practice it correctly, with motivation and enthusiasm. Modern mindfulness is a secular practice that can benefit us, in terms of our physical, mental and emotional health.
We tend to be in a constant state of doing, stressed and overwhelmed and many times, overstimulated.
This paying attention on purpose, or mindfulness as a modern practice, has its origins on scientific research from the past century and includes 2 main components.
- Mindfulness is paying attention to the present moment, to your present experience, with intention, on purpose.
- Mindfulness also includes our approach or attitude, which is of openness, gentleness and non- judgement.
This way, we come back to our present experience internationally, without judging or categorizing whatever it is we are experiencing, but instead, opening to the experience per se.
Is it so that mindfulness can be understood as a practice. A formal practice where we pay attention to objects such as our breath, thoughts, the sounds and many others.
But also, and very important, we bring this awareness into our daily life, in a more informal format. We pay attention to common activities from our daily routines, and we become truly present, instead of getting lost in thoughts, worries or anxieties.
If we practice mindfulness, the state of mindfulness that we train during our formal practice can strengthen, and we can also increase the trait of mindfulness, by incorporating it into our daily lives.
We will be truly aware of life as it opens it wings to us. We will be able to stop, breathe and simply be.
Does this solve any doubts or confusions about secular, modern mindfulness?
