Self- compassion is a way to relate to ourselves that doesn’t rely on an assessment, such as external factors or validations. This is the case when our self-worth is influenced by other people’s opinions, our achievements, our physical appearance and financial status.
When we practice self-compassion, we can become aware of what we’re experiencing, realize we’re human, which implies that it’s part of our human experience to go through difficulties, to pursue happiness, and this realization is evidence of our common humanity. We understand we’re more alike than different at the core. we feel connected to others.
Furthermore, with self-compassion, we can offer ourselves kindness and support in all moments.
Now, let’s discuss the beneficial impact of self-compassion on our well-being and life and some ways Self- compassion can sound like, as inner dialogue :
- I don’t have to be productive all the time. It’s okay to take a break.
- I choose to honor my core values and let them guide my decisions.
- It’s normal to make mistakes. I’m human.
- Nobody is perfect. I don’t need to be perfect either.
- I celebrate that I tried my best.
- I can embrace my emotions with kindness.
- I’m here for myself.
- My worth doesn’t depend on the opinions of others.
Furthermore, when we practice self- compassion regularly, it can start manifesting in our life in different ways. For example:
- You are willing to try new things, without focusing so much on the outcome or being perfect at it
- You allow yourself to rest when you need it, honoring your body.
- You are able to forgive yourself for mistakes or failures. We all experience them.
- You feel more inclined to connect with others when you need the extra support.
- You acknowledge that all beings possess intrinsic worth, and you are worthy too.
A great way to support your self- compassion journey, notice the way you talk to yourself, recognize your needs and validate your emotions is through Journaling.
You can use a regular journal or a digital one, like @myjourney.app , which I had the chance to try through a free Membership and collaboration.
First, some of the benefits of this app are:
- The Jounal is with you at all times if you have the app on your phone and it’s linked to your Google account.
- You can include as many entries as you want during the day.
- You can add pictures and links, like Youtube videos.
- It can include your location, mood and weather.
- It offers prompts directed towards specific goals through the Coaching programs, which can offer you a boost of motivation to start or revamp your journaling habit.
- It’s generally user-friendly. You can conveniently use Journey on almost all platforms, including, macOS, iOS, Android, Windows, Linux, and the web.
Now, some of the things I didn’t like about the app:
- It’s a little expensive, if you want to access your previous entries or Coaching Programs.
- If you use the free version, you get reminder or adds to upgrade, which can be distracting at times.
- You might have some difficulties with the synchronization if you use different devices.
Overall, I found the app very practical and fun to use, especially because you can have it handy when you’re on the go and you can go back to it and reflect a little bit about your day. I also enjoyed the prompts, which can enhance your ability to self- reflect. I had the chance to create a Coaching Program about: Mindful communication 🙂
During this Program, you’ll be able to assess how you communicate, how you listen to others, the content and tone of your words and body language and find ways to engage more mindfully in order to build deeper and more meaningful connections with others.
If you want to check it out, here’s the link of the app: https://journey.cloud/
Some final thoughts:
Journaling can support your self- compassion process, but make sure you do it at your own pace, while honoring your boundaries and needs.
Just remember that the relationship with ourselves is one that needs nurturing and attention, because is the most important relationship of our lives.
Another gentle reminder….
